Generally, spring is the best time for prepping and planting flower beds, and beginning hardscaping projects. The summer construction season is when the majority of large landscaping and hardscaping projects are done. In contrast, fall is a great time for planting trees and bushes since temperatures are lower. Hardscaping also continues through the fall until the colder later months of the year.
Your typical modern landscaping refers to the designing, planning, and construction of gardens and other features that create useable space for outdoor activities, while also enhancing the appearance around a home. Landscaping can include hardscaping and softscaping, although many people just refer to softscaping and landscaping interchangeably. Hardscaping, then can include materials such as stone and wood, retaining walls, decks, firepits, and much more. Think of Softscaping as the planting designs, creating burms, grading, and mulching. Now matter how you say it, Straw Hat Lawn Service does it!
Aeration should preferably take place during high growth periods. This can typically be during the cooler times of the year when there’s more rain, mainly the spring and fall. Aeration does put stress on the turf, which could be counter-productive when the grounds are highly stressed already due to high heat and occasional periods of drought. At Straw Hat Lawn Service, we recommend fall aeration with overseeding to help loosen the soil and develop new growth at the same time. Aeration is great for any lawn but especially if it gets a lot of foot traffic, or possibly a part of new construction with fresh compacted soil.
Improving soil quality can be achieved through various methods such as adding organic matter like compost, aged manure, or leaf mulch to enrich soil fertility and structure. Soil testing can help determine nutrient deficiencies and pH levels, allowing for targeted soil amendments. Additionally, practicing minimal tillage and avoiding compaction through use of methods such as aeration can promote healthy soil biology.
Fertilizing with an appropriate fertilizer and applying lime if necessary can strengthen the grass. Controlling winter weeds with herbicides or by hand helps maintain lawn health. Regularly clearing debris like leaves and branches prevents smothering and fungal issues. Proper watering during dry spells, especially for cool-season grasses, is important, while avoiding overwatering when it's wet. Limiting foot traffic on wet grass can prevent damage. For those wanting a year-round green lawn, overseeding with a cool-season grass in late fall can be done, but avoid overseeding warm-season grass too thickly as it can weaken the existing grass.
✅ Keep your garden clean. Pick up plant debris, remove dying stems or branches, weed the area regularly, and toss the debris in the compost.
✅ Fertilize just enough to keep your plants happy – too much fertilizer promotes weak growth which is susceptible to disease.
✅ Wait to plant until the soil is warmed up. Planting too early will put extra stress on your plants and make them more susceptible to disease in the soil.
✅Use mulch to keep weeds at bay and retain moisture in the ground.
✅ Inspect and remove infected stems and leaves. As soon as you notice signs of disease, carefully remove the leaf or stems. By removing disease early on, you can help your plants to continue to grow and limit disease spread.
